Great-grandmother dies after brutal attack, home invasion

Dorothy Dow, the Meriwether County woman who was severely beaten and burned in a home invasion earlier in August, has died, an official confirmed. She was 83.
Dow died Saturday afternoon at Grady Memorial Hospital, Meriwether County Deputy Coroner Leonard Wigley Jr. told Channel 2 Action News.
Dow was injured after several people demanded money from her when they entered her Grantville house, Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith said earlier. The break-in occurred between 11 p.m. and midnight.
“She pleaded with them that she did not have any money,” Smith said.
The attackers broke both of Dow’s arms and left cuts and bruises on her face, officials said. They also poured a flammable liquid on her and lit it, Smith said.
Beth Dow, the victim’s daughter-in-law, said Dorothy Dow remembered she had a gallon of water that she used to fill her breathing machine.
“With those broken hands, she took the top off the gallon of water and poured it on her head and put out the flames,” Beth Dow said.
Justin Pierce Grady, 38, Cortavious Deshun Heard, 18, Shanquavious Keontrell Cameron, 17, Mina Christine Ellery, 17, and Angel Latrice Harmon, 17, are facing multiple charges in connection with the incident, Channel 2 reported. The charges against the five people were upgraded to murder Monday, Meriwether officials said.
Grady and Heard previously worked at Dow’s home.
