For several days, property owners in Washington State kept seeing a dog that was acting strangely. When its long trek deep into the woods was finally followed, an incredible discovery in a concrete cistern would be made.
Apparently, Tillie the setter and her friend Phoebe had been missing for over a week, and the entire time, Tillie was standing guard over the concrete structure, where Phoebe had fallen in and become trapped, reported USAToday. Every day, she would emerge from the area deep in a ravine in the woods to find help, and finally local property owners took notice.
The nonprofit rescue organization Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) had created a post about the missing dogs, praying they would be able to reunite them with their owners. Fortunately, the property owners saw it, then alerted the group to a “reddish” dog that they had seen acting strangely. The dog would approach them, then quickly run back into the woods as if it was asking for help.
Amy Carey with VIPP said that once volunteers received the tip, they headed straight out into the woods to follow the pup’s path and investigate. That’s when they made the incredible discovery – Tillie had stayed by her friend’s side for the entire week.
“They knew that meant Phoebe was inside the cistern. Every breath was held and every doggie prayer offered that the peek over the rim would somehow find her safe,” Carey said.
Much to their delight, Phoebe was in the cistern, and she was unharmed. Although both dogs were cold from being outside and hungry from not eating in a week, their remarkable story of survival inspired Carey to let those who may have lost an animal know to never give up hope.
“Hope is an awfully hard thing to keep open and alive in the face of heartbreak, but it so important for happy endings for missing pets – or even for unhappy endings with closure,” she said.
It’s truly incredible that these dogs had such a strong bond that one of them stayed with the other until she was able to get help. However, any dog owner would tell you that while it is remarkable, it’s really not surprising. Dogs are undoubtedly loyal to both their masters and their friends, and stories like this only help to solidify what us dog lovers already knew.
