A woman was headed down a rural road in Kilgore, Texas, when she saw a police officer. Not soon after she noticed him, she realized what he was holding and snapped a photo. On closer look, she was shocked by what else her picture caught, that she didn’t notice the moment she took it.
When the officer pulled a mother over for a minor traffic violation, he didn’t realize what he was in for. Everything seemed about as average as these kind of stops go, until the woman’s young daughter, Bailey, became visibly terrified at seeing a cop, who also happened to be ticketing her mother. This made her feel as though her mom was going to jail, or that the officer was about to hurt her, since that’s what she’s learned from others.

In a post written for Love What Matters, Officer Phillips explained the moment he saw how scared the girl was, and his first inclination was to help her. “I hate seeing kids get upset when we encounter mom and/or dad, so when Bailey began to cry, obviously I had to try my hand at cheering her up!” He tried offering her candy several times, but she refused and he was left with not knowing what else to do to calm her down.
Her mother was standing outside the car, holding her daughter and being unable to make her feel comfortable when the girl decided for herself exactly what she needed. “After several minutes of trying, Bailey jumped straight out of her mother’s arms, and literally surprised me by launching herself into my arms! She never even touched the ground!” Phillips wrote. He accepted her with open arms, then just held her, showing her love she needed not just in that moment, but perhaps in life to feel safe.

Bailey’s mom was just as shocked as the cop was at her daughter’s assertiveness, and she snapped a photo of their endearing embrace that didn’t end too quickly. He didn’t just make her day better, she turned his day around for the better as well. “The truth is that she literally turned my day into joy!” Phillips said in his post. “These right here are the interactions that change minds about police. We know people are nervous, and often scared, when we’re around, but we’re human too, and we love to have those moments where we can interact with people like this!”
What the little girl’s mom saw in the picture was that police work isn’t just about issuing tickets and looking for who they can arrest. In fact, that’s the least of what they hope to accomplish on a shift. The purpose of the job is to look for ways to help other people, make them feel safe, and serve them as they protect. Bailey sensed that in Phillips and her mom was happy she saw the bigger picture.
