After doing a bit of shopping, a Missouri mother was recently delighted on the way home, when she looked down to see a crisp $100 bill on her windshield. She would only later discover exactly how it got there and has since issued a warning about why you should never pick one up if you find one on your car.
The incident took place in Fenton, Missouri, after Kyri Viehman had gone to her local Michael’s craft store for a few gifts. However, it wasn’t until she was driving home that she noticed something out of the ordinary – a $100 bill on her windshield tucked under one of her wiper blades.
As just about anyone would do, she quickly pulled the car over and retrieved the bill, thinking that someone placed it there in an act of kindness. Much to her disappointment, after getting out of the car and walking around to the front, she noticed that it was actually fake with the inside reading, “Ha you thought this was real didn’t you?”
She’d eventually take a picture of it as well and post it to Facebook – but not for the reason you may think.
It was only after going home and doing a bit of research that Kyri noticed the dangers of how the situation could have gone terribly wrong. This is actually part of a scam where carjackers lure drivers out of their cars only to hop in and speed off with their vehicle.
When the vehicle’s driver gets out to collect the money they are carjacked. The open door and key in the ignition is all thieves need to jump in and take off with the car.
Luckily, Kyri had already driven away from the scene when she saw the bill, otherwise this could have gone much differently. To make matters worse, she more than likely would have noticed it after placing her son in his car seat, meaning that if her car was stolen, her child would have been taken as well.
Kyri cannot say for certain that this was the reason the fake $100 ended up on her windshield, but she states that it’s a frightening possibility. All she really wants out of all this is to warn others. “Everyone just be careful and be smart with your actions,” she wrote in her Facebook post. “Be aware of your surroundings at all times, and if you feel uncomfortable, ask for someone to walk you to your car. Stay safe out there.”
