Police animals have a dangerous, honorable, difficult job. Whether dogs or horses, these animals deserve every bit as much of respect as every police officer. The heartbreak we can feel over those who give their lives for us may even be more for those who serve on four legs.
For that reason, Charlotte the Police Horse deserves as much media attention as the other officers who have fallen in the line of duty recently. Charlotte had been serving for more than four years. The horse was partnered with Houston Police Officer Herrejon, who was very close to his partner.
The horse had served well, and fell tragically recently.
During a patrol of the Huston streets recently, Charlotte and Herrejon were walking past a cement truck when a big chuck of material in the truck caused a loud noise. The horse got spooked and panicked.
Officer Herrejon was bucked from Charlotte’s back, and she rushed into the street, where she was tragically struck by a car that could not stop in time. Officer Herrejon was stricken, bursting into tears as he comforted his partner in the street. Little did he know at the time that that would be his final moments with his partner.
Charlotte was not to survive the freak accident. Though she fell only two years after starting her service, Charlotte had mad quite an impact at the department.
The horse is being praised by the police department, and should be honored as we would honor every other police officer.
