China’s Hunan province is the home of the world’s scariest pedestrian bridge. Located nearly 1,000 feet above the Tianmenshan National Forest Park, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Bridge is made out of glass and extends for 1,400 feet, with a width of 20 feet. Safety tests indicate the bridge can withstand the weight of 800 people at any one time.
The main concern with the bridge is vibration, which could weaken it and cause it to collapse. Engineers addressed this issue by reinforcing the structure with 70 glass balls that weigh 1,700 pounds each. The bridge’s top engineer, Wan Tianbao, said the bridge has continuously undergone numerous tests to make sure it is 100 percent safe for those using it. He admitted that most people would probably still find it quite scary.
When the bridge opens in the near future, it will become the home of the highest bungee jump in the world and will also feature three swings, one of which will be 560 feet long. A Zhangjiajie Canyon Tourism Management Company spokesperson, Joe Chen, said the bridge is expected to draw the brave and the curious alike. Currently, no official opening date has been set for the amazing sky walk.
