Coach Sees His Players Disrespecting National Anthem, Teaches Them A Lesson They’ll Never Forget
By Dreamer

Virginia Tech basketball coach Buzz Williams recently noticed something that bothered him – his players were fooling around during the National Anthem before games. They were talking to each another, swaying, laughing and generally not showing the solemn respect that Williams feels should be present while the anthem is playing. Instead of lecturing them or yelling, at them, he tried something else.
Williams arranged for a group of real-life veterans to visit his players and had the occasion filmed. The veterans arrived in full uniform and lined up facing the young players, and, while the two groups stared at one another, Williams gave a heartfelt speech where he thanked the veterans for their service and explained to his team that they have made profound sacrifices for the good of the United States. He told his team that during the anthem the proper conduct is to be standing straight and motionless with right hand over the heart and left hand behind the back. He added that during the anthem they should be reflecting on what the lyrics of the song convey about patriotism and service.

Finally, in the empty gymnasium, Williams had the veterans and his players stand together in a straight line while the anthem was played over the loudspeakers. The players stood at attention just as they had been instructed, and their body language showed respect for the anthem and the veterans beside them. It was clear Williams had made his point.
