Los Angeles-based hairstylist Chaz Dean is a popular hair stylist, and after appearing on TV styling has gained a large following He has even had celebrities such as Charlize Theron and Alanis Morissette endorse his product.
Chaz also released his own conditioner, something terrible has happened to many people who have used the conditioner and Chaz is now in some hot water for it.
Chaz’s product, Wen, was an instant success raking in over $100 million in the second year of sales, but in November, a lawsuit was filed against Chaz and Guthy-Renker, the infomercial giant which sees to Wen’s marketing. A woman named Amy Friedman bought the Wen Sweet Almond Mint pack for $29.99 and when she used it, had some pretty adverse side effects.
Amy had stopped using the conditioner after just two weeks, but nevertheless lost a quarter to one third of her hair in the process.
Other women have reported similar if not identical effects, including rashes, redness, irritation, hair breakage, and hair discoloration.
One consumer wrote a post online about her experience saying, “I was a professional model with beautiful long natural hair, after using this product my scalp and face broke out in boils and my hair fell out in chunks. This shampoo destroyed my life.”
The lawsuit claims, “the WEN products at issue contain a caustic ingredient that causes a chemical reaction and damages hair and follicles” and includes “numerous harsh chemicals and known human allergens.”
Guthy Renker has come out with opposition claiming, “There is no scientific evidence to support any claim that our hair care products caused anyone to lose their hair. There are many reasons why individuals may lose their hair, all unrelated to Wen hair products. We intend to vigorously contest the allegations made against our products. And, we encourage any customer with any questions to contact us.”
