Female officer, 24, loses her life after saving a woman on a domestic call

A female police officer loses her life after responding to a domestic violence call. Breann Leath is the first African-American woman to be killed in the history of the Indianapolis Police Department.
Officer Leath approached the scene on the east side of Indianapolis with two other cops to a domestic incident involving a man and a woman.
After shooting the woman involved in the domestic dispute, the man then shot the 24-year-old officer in the head, as Fox59 News reports.

Officer Leath was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead on arrival while the female civilian sustained minor-non-threatening injuries.
In a video posted on YouTube her heartbroken parents thanked the community and police for their kind words and support.
Mom Jennifer Leath said her daughter was always the first person to help those that needed it and was living her dream working as a police officer.
“I hope her classmates and her shift mates know how much she loved this job and cherished every moment of it, she was having the time of her life.”
Breann joined the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) two years ago and was assigned to the east side.
“This is the first African-American female killed not only in IPD (Indianapolis Police Department) history but even IMPD,” said her commander, Richard Riddle.
“From when she started at the academy and her time on East District, it was spent with a big smile, big beautiful smile…. a very caring person who cared about the community and did whatever she could to make people feel better and to go out of her way to help people when they are in need,” Riddle said.
“Officer Leath was kind and loving as a mother of a young child herself. She is the daughter of a family that’s been devoted to public safety and a lifelong resident of Indianapolis,” said IMPD Chief Randal Taylor.
The officer’s patrol car is on display outside the IMPD East District headquarters so people can drive by and pay their respects and a ceremony honoring her service will be held but closed to the public in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Elliahs Dorsey, 27, is charged with one count of murder, four counts of attempted murder, one count of criminal confinement, and one count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, Fox59 News reports.
