Police say they found an 11-year-old and a 1-year-old standing outside their home on Summers Avenue, holding a sign asking for help.
The 11-year-old told police that her mother, Schalinda Ball, left her home alone for four hours, watching her baby sister. The young girl told police she did not have a phone to call for help.
According to court documents, the girl also told police that her mother occasionally left her with her sister for a few minutes to go to the store but never for this long.
South Charleston police could not find any adults at the home and attempted to find the children's grandmother. According to police, they found the children's mother at the grandmother's home. It is still unclear where Ball may have been before that.

Police say Ball told them she only left the children home for about an hour. Ball is charged with child neglect creating risk of injury for the 1-year-old, who was allegedly left home alone.
She remains in the South Central Regional Jail; her bond is $10,500.
These children have been let down by the person who is supposed to protect them at all costs. They must have been terrified being alone, which lead them outside with the sign asking anyone who could see them for help. Thankfully, these officers were able to discover these kids before something far worse had happened to them.
