Oklahoma City officers responded to a call regarding an elderly woman parked in her motorized scooter on the side of the street. Without realizing the gravity of her story that got her in that position in the first place, they did something strange when nobody was looking, thinking they were out of sight and the woman wouldn’t tell.

Oklahoma City officers responded to a call regarding an elderly woman parked in her motorized scooter on the side of the street. Without realizing the gravity of her story that got her in that position in the first place, they did something strange when nobody was looking, thinking they were out of sight and the woman wouldn’t tell.
Visibly distressed and sobbing, the 75-year-old woman, only known as Ms. Carroll, was stranded and alone in the only means of transportation she had to her name — a motorized scooter. The wheels stopped rolling, the gears ceased, and the battery was done. She could go no further than where here scooter stopped working, which was only made worse by where she was trying to go on a very special day this past Saturday afternoon.
Motorist noticed her and didn’t stop, but they did call 911 to get her some assistance. That’s when Oklahoma City police officers Amy Hanson and Travis Vernier arrived and did what nobody expected.

Through her tears, Ms. Carroll explained that it was her 75th birthday that day, and all she wanted to do was get to the supermarket to buy a modest cake. She planned to take the celebratory treat back to her home, where she lived alone, and blow out the candles on this milestone birthday before calling it a night and heading to bed. It was the one thing she had to look forward to and she was going to party that day, even if it meant making the motorized trek alone to get her cake.
Sadly, she didn’t make it so far and was only sad that her celebratory plans she had made for herself were completely ruined, and on top of it she couldn’t get back home. She asked the officers if they could give her a ride back to her place, which they agreed to do, but they took the long route back instead.
Rather than going directly to her home, Officers Hanson and Vernier stopped at the supermarket and got her the birthday cake of her dreams, complete with candles so she could sufficiently celebrate her 75th birthday. Ms. Carroll was moved to tears again, this time for a much better reason — the kindness of two police officers who were both protecting and serving her by going above and beyond the call of duty.
When their department got wind of what these cops had done for a special citizen in need, they posted about it to their Facebook page. The response from others in the community was overwhelming, with droves of other people wanting to give in one way or another to Ms. Carroll.
Not only did these officers go above and beyond to make her birthday special, they also brought back hope for humanity. The world can always use more of that.
