3. Turmeric

The curcuma is contained in the turmeric, this ingredient has strong antiseptic and antibacterial properties, therefore it is able to eliminate the bacteria that is causing the mucus and from there it reduces the phlegm. It is a potent immunity booster.

Ingredients:

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1 glass of warm water

1 teaspoon of turmeric

Instructions:

Add the turmeric in the glass of water. You can then add the salt and stir well. Gargle from 3 to 4 times on daily basis, for a few minutes. With this method you will be able to relieve from the phlegm in your chest and treat every respiratory infection.

Also gargling with warm salt water is a good option, because the warm water will calm the irritated throat, and on the other hand the salt will eliminate the present bacteria.

4. Steam Inhalation

To eliminate mucus and prevent from chest congestion, one of the most used and most effective home remedies is the steam inhalation. With this technique you will be able to restrain the clogged mucus. If you want to even boost the effects, add some dry herbs in the water.

Ingredients:

1/2 teaspoon of thyme

1/2 teaspoon of dry rosemary

4 to 5 cups of boiling water

Instructions:

In a larger pot boil the thyme and the rosemary. Then use a towel to cover your head and inhale the steam that is coming out. With this simple technique you will be able to make the secretion a lot more loose. You can do this inhalation a few times on daily basis.

Also taking a hot bath twice on daily basis for 10 minutes, will help you break down the mucus a lot easier. But after the bath you need to quickly moisturize the body, because the skin becomes dry from the hot water.

You can even boost the effects of this method by adding some essential oils, which can soothe congestion, reduce inflammation and destroy germs. You can add the tea tree oil, because it is able to treat an irritated throat and respiratory infections, because of its powerful antimicrobial properties. Also the menthol oil is a good choice, because it can relieve from sinus infection symptoms and soothe congestion.

Also blowing your runny nose will help you reduce the phlegm, apply a warm compress on the affected areas, raise humidity in your home, avoid cold drinks, and drink warm liquids. The chest congestion and irritated respiratory tract may be even made worse by smoking cigarettes.

Your lungs and throat may become even more irritated from chemicals and household cleaners, and this may also increase the production of mucus. Spicing your meals with garlic, capsaicin, chili and peppers will soothe the congestion.
