When Connecticut police received a call from an emotionally distraught mother, who had an unusual request, they weren’t exactly sure what scene they would be arriving to that afternoon. As soon as they showed up and saw the woman’s face, they took immediate action.
Norwich police officers Elizabeth Harsley and Christopher Hawrylik were the first responders to the home of a woman, who was extremely stressed about a situation with her young daughter. With nobody else to turn to, she called the only people she knew would answer and come to her aid, but never did she expect what would happen next.

According to NBC, the unidentified woman was having an emotional breakdown over the reality that she couldn’t afford a birthday cake for her daughter. All she wanted to do was make her little girl feel special on her day. The stress of all her financial hardship had come to a head, when it directly affected a simple thing for her kid, that she wasn’t going to be able to provide.
The mom was in a moment of distress, perhaps just wanting a little emotional support from these strangers. Harsley and Hawrylik said that when she answered the door, they couldn’t help but be moved by the heartbreaking look on this overwhelmed mom’s face. Through tears of feeling as though she was failing as a parent, she explained her birthday cake dilemma. The two kindhearted cops couldn’t let this slide, not for her or her daughter.
Harsley and Hawrylik left the woman’s home and went right to the store, where they purchased a beautiful birthday cake for the mother to surprise her little girl with the next day. They reached into their own pockets to pay for it, and with a beaming smile on each of their faces, delivered it to the emotional mom’s home, Hartford SunTimes reported.
She was overwhelmed once again by their kind gesture, this time sobbing tears of gratitude that someone would think to do something like this for her, when she felt all else in life was against her. Because of the officer’s thoughtfulness, this little girl could enjoy the simple treat of a slice of cake with her mom to celebrate her birthday.
