BBB Warning: If You Shop on Amazon, You Might Want to Read This

The Better Business Bureau recently issued a warning to Amazon shoppers: If you visit the site, beware that criminals may try to take over your computer.
Apparently a 70-year-old woman in Northeast Florida reported that as she was looking up a product on Amazon, she clicked on a site, which led her to dial a number that she believed was Amazon customer service.

“A third party broke in and said, ‘We are with this company, and we want to offer you this security for your computer.’ Then from there, we’re not sure how they gained access to her computer,” Shannon Nelson, of the BBB’s Northeast Florida and Southeast Atlantic office, told Yes We Coupon.
The third party kept pushing the woman to buy anti-virus software for her computer.
“When I kept refusing, they kept lowering the price,” the woman, identified as Jacqueline, said.
The people over the phone gave her the name of the company, Tech Crew LLC, and lowered their purchase price from $1,499 to $1,000. But Jacqueline refused to buy. She ended the conversation by hanging up.
Moments later, she found that her computer was moving slowly, and that an icon lay in the corner of her screen that contained software she had never purchased.
“They have been harassing me ever since,” Jacqueline said. “The last conversation I had with them, they threatened me with legal action. I’m very frustrated and I’m very frightened. I don’t know what they’re going to do. I feel violated.”
Nelson said that this type of scam is unprecedented. She encourages shoppers to make sure of the website address they’re visiting before clicking on “spoofed information.”
