Terry and Pamela Blegen were traveling down a rural Wisconsin road last week with hardly another soul in sight, when a splash from the nearby lake caught their eye. Something was sticking up out of the water, but it was sinking fast beneath the sheet of ice. They soon realized what was happening.

The Blegen’s immediately pulled over along Balsam Lake that terrifying afternoon on December 23. Without waiting for help to arrive, they decided to act fast before a potential rescue turned into a recovery effort. Terry jumped into the icy lake and headed for the pickup truck that had slid off the street and into the water, where it broke through the layer of ice and was going under, according to KMSP. What he found inside the car, made him frantic.
The driver and passenger of the sinking truck were two teen girls, 19-year-old Nycole Stream and 16-year-old Krystyna Walenczak. They weren’t alone, and soon two men would show up to the scene just as the Blegens were trying to get the teens out to safety.

As Terry was in the water, Pamela stayed to the side of the road and called 911. Help wasn’t coming fast enough, and the car was almost fully submerged on its side in the freezing water. The good Samaritan had gained access into the car since the windows had broken upon rollover, and he could see the girls inside struggling to keep afloat.
Just as Terry reached to grab one, two men stopped, 40-year-old Thomas Cole and 46-year-old Shawn Stafford, who happened to be taking the rather desolate road that afternoon. Seeing what was underway, they jumped in to help Terry, and the three men successfully pulled the girls out, but there was more inside than they realized.

The teens were traveling with an infant who was trapped beneath the water and unable to be seen without fishing around for the 5-month-old. After some frantic searching, the men found little Ayidden Stream still alive and pulled him to safety as well. The girls and infant were transported to a nearby hospital, where they have fully recovered and have since gone home.
All three crash victims were saved just in the nick of time, because one couple and two men were in the right place at the right time. They did what they had to do to rescue them, without waiting for Polk County emergency services to arrive, who were probably bogged down with other accidents on that dangerous day of adverse travel conditions. Had it not been for these heroes being brave enough to risk their own lives, these three young lives may not have made it.
