How This New Nail Polish Can Protect You From Rape

By Timfly

A startling number of females have fallen victim to sexual assault, with the epidemic often being fueled by date rape drugs being added to an unsuspecting person’s drink.

While the issue will continue to be debated by pundits and policy-makers, four young guys at North Carolina State University are doing something proactive about the situation, by inventing a nail polish which can detect date rape drugs.

The prototype nail polish named “Undercover Colors” works by dipping your finger in your drink, and if date rape drugs are detected, the polish will change colors.

New records show that over the past two years, investors have chipped in $5.5 million to research the polish. Scientists are still testing it, but on their Facebook page creators promise new developments are coming in 2017.

“I usually have nail polish on; usually it's chipped, but I think it's a good idea,” says patron Maggie Stroh.  “If it just helps one person. I usually always feel safe, but I'm usually almost always aware of my surroundings,” says Stroh.

But some doctors worry the polish could paint a false sense of security by only testing for a few of the date rape drugs that exist.

And counselors fear the product covers up what's really important: talking about and actually stopping rape.

“What if the nail polish doesn't work? Why are we even having to do these things?” says Kathleen Kempke, Crisis Center of Tampa Bay’s Director of Sexual Assault Services.

Kempke says people can better protect a potential victim by stepping in to help before an attack happens.

“More so than whistles or nail polish or pepper spray is just being aware that something’s going to happen and doing something,” says Kempke.

Recent statistics released from the Council on Women and Girls state 1 in 5 female students are assaulted while only 1 in 8 student victims report it:

“No one is more at risk of being raped or sexually assaulted than women at our nation’s colleges and universities,” said the report by the White House Council on Women and Girls.

According to the report, almost 22 million American women and 1.6 million men have been raped in their lifetimes. The effects of rape can have lasting consequences including depression, substance abuse, and chronic pain. The report lists the date rape drug as the contributing factor to the rapes, since the effects leave the victim incapacitated. Often perpetrators are serial offenders, and often times someone that the victim knows.
