Fernando Herrera was hoping to feed his craving for fried chicken when he popped into the restaurant, Hook Fish And Chicken, but he got much more than he was expecting. It began when he passed by an unidentified man outside the eatery, who was having casual conversation with a woman and child who confronted him with a question.
The incident that originally took place in August, but it has recently gained national attention. In a Facebook post, Herrera explained that he’ll never be the same after what he saw. The only person who the woman felt comfortable asking for bus fare was this homeless man. Without hesitation, Herrera said that the guy gave the mother all the loose change in his pockets, which he had planned to use to buy food before she confronted him on his way into the restaurant.
“He knew if he gave it to her, he wouldn’t have money to eat, and yet he still gave it to her,” Herrera explained, before deciding to take action. “He started walking away when I called him.”
Knowing this guy was going to go hungry, Herrera suddenly didn’t have the urge for a big bucket of chicken. Instead, he wanted to help this man who didn’t hesitate to do the same for someone else. He told the vagrant to order anything he wanted from the menu, but the man humbly declined his offer.
Herrera didn’t want to let him go without a hot meal, so he convinced him to stay, insisting on buying him some chicken and fries. Even still, the homeless man picked the smallest item on the menu, while Herrera ordered the largest. When the food came out, the good Samaritan pulled a fast one on the homeless man, giving him the big order, while keeping the small one for himself.

Before leaving the chicken place with a full heart, Herrera thanked the homeless man for teaching him an important life lesson through his actions. He showed him “that money doesn’t mean anything if you aren’t helping others.” That’s when the vagrant began to cry and hug Herrera, then they sat down and began eating the food.
“Some people are blessed more than others, but that doesn’t mean we’re better than them,” Herrera reflected in his post. “It’s a test God gives us to see who we really are. Help others because you never know when you’ll need help,” he concluded of the lesson he felt fortunate to learn that day.
