Jobless Family Of 10 Rejects 5 Bedroom Home, Lives In Taxpayer Funded Hotel, Has Special Request

A family of 10 has criticized a British council for not providing a large enough home after they turned down a five-bedroom house and were put up in a hotel for four months -- which was paid for by taxpayers.

Arnold Malle Sube and his wife, Jeanne, live in a three-bedroom council house in Luton, Bedfordshire, with their eight children. They say their current living situation is "terrible," but turned down a larger home due to lack of space. The couple says they need at least six double bedrooms to live comfortably, notes the Daily Mail.

"Me and my family have been neglected," Arnold told Mirror. "It's so cramped and the conditions are terrible. Everyone is sleeping everywhere and my wife is sleeping with the baby so I am on the sofa. I am homeless in my home now."

The family moved from France to the U.K. in 2012 for Arnold to study mental health nursing at the University of Bedfordshire.

Before the family was placed in their current home, they were put up for about four months in a Hampton by Hilton hotel, costing over $200 per night for a total of more than $50,000, paid for by the government.

In addition to their hotel stay, the family has received an additional $60,000 in housing and child benefits, as well as child tax credits. Their rent is covered by taxpayers.

The father says their current home is not suitable for the size of his family. He says his daughters sleep on two single bunk beds in one bedroom, while his three sons share one bunk bed in another room. The entire family shares one bathroom.

Arnold says he has enlisted help from solicitors in order to get a house big enough to comfortably fit his entire family.

Speaking about the five-bedroom house the family was offered, Arnold said, "There wasn't enough space for the things of ten people, it didn't even have a dining room."

A spokesperson for the Luton Borough Council released a statement about the Sube family's situation.

"Despite difficulties we managed to find Mr. and Mrs. Sube affordable housing in Luton that is large enough to house them and their eight children," the statement said. "After a generous offer on our part, we have done our bit and if housing is offered and declined without, what we judge, good reason, then we will offer property to another family."

Councilor Michael Garrett added that there are "not many five-bedroom council houses in Luton and they were lucky to be offered one."
