Fisherman Finds Out His Good Luck Charm Is Worth $100M

By Timfly

An unnamed fisherman found a two-foot-long pearl off the Philippine coast and kept it for ten years as a good luck charm.

The 75-pound pearl could possibly be the largest in the world, according to the Daily Mail, and is five times larger than the previous record.

The fisherman found the pearl in a giant clam ten years ago near Palawan Island in the Philippines. He was out during a storm and attempted to anchor his boat. The anchor got stuck on what he thought was a rock. He decided to swim down and pull up the anchor himself and, to his surprise, found the gem. Unaware of its worth, he kept the pearl in his small, rundown home for years as a good luck charm.

However, after his house burned down and he was left with nothing, the man decided to appraise the pearl to see if he could get a fresh start. He brought his good luck charm to a local tourist office.

The pearl measures one foot foot wide and 2.2 feet long. Officials hope that the pearl will encourage tourists to visit the Philippines.

"We were amazed when he brought it to us," said tourist official Aileen Cynthia Amurao to the Mail. "We now need help from gemologists to fully certify it."

"We will keep this here in the Philippines and I hope it will bring more tourists to the city," she added.

Amurao has begun a campaign over social media to find experts willing to authenticate the gem, according to ITV. The current record holder for largest pearl, the Pearl of Lao Tzu, was also found in the Philippines. Discovered in the 1930s, it is dwarfed in comparison to this new find, weighing only 15 pounds.

"We believe Puerto Princesca is likely [to] earn another prestigious title and a record breaker for having the world's biggest natural giant pearl from a giant clam," said Amurao to the Daily Mail.
